What is Bloating?

Abdominal bloating is a symptom of a swelling or distension of the belly. It takes place when your gastrointestinal (GI) tract is partially or completely filled with air or gas. The gastrointestinal tract ranges from the mouth to the anus (bottom). It includes your entire digestive system. When you're bloated, it appears as if you've eaten a large meal and there's no more room in your stomach. It can make you feel uncomfortable or even be painful.

Symptoms of Bloating

Pains on the right side are often confused with problems in the appendix or the gallbladder. The most common symptom of bloating is the sensation that the abdomen is full or distended. One symptom of gas that is not associated with it is the hiccup. Hiccups are harmless and go away on their own; they also aid in the removal of gas from the digestive tract before it travels to the intestines and causes bloating.

Common symptoms of bloating include stomach pain, discomfort, gas, frequent burps or belches, or abdominal rumbling or gurgling. There are other serious symptoms that may occur along with bloating. Some of them are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in your stool, vaginal bleeding (between your periods, or postmenopausal), and heartburn that is getting worse.

Causes of Bloating

Bloating occurs when the GI tract fills with air or gas. The primary causes of increased gassiness are the foods you eat and how you eat them. Some foods are more gas-producing than others such as beans, vegetables, and other high-fiber foods. Lactose intolerance can also contribute to it (problems with dairy). Other simple reasons for bloating include: swallowing air (this can happen when you chew gum, smoke, or eat too fast), constipation, overeating, reflux (GERD), weight gain, menstruation (in some women), eating fatty foods, celiac disease (gluten intolerance), gallstones, indigestion, drinking a lot of soda or other carbonated beverages, H. pylori infection (which can lead to stomach ulcers), gastroparesis, and many more.

All of the above-mentioned factors contribute to bloated stomach abdominal pain. During the digestion of food, everyone's body produces gases such as methane, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. And some of them are released outside the body, sometimes in small amounts that go unnoticed, and sometimes in substantial quantities that disrupt the normal of life.
